The TSA said passengers looking to board a plane without Real ID, known as STAR ID in Alabama, a passport or other approved document will be required to pay a $45 fee to use an “alternative identity verification system.” The change goes into effect Feb. 1, 2026.
On top of the extra costs, travelers without a Real ID could also face delays getting through security, the agency said.

On Monday, the agency announced that flyers without compliant identification will pay a $45 fee for identity verification at security checkpoints.
